Addiction Recovery and the Twelve Steps

Elder Mathew Cowley of the quorum of the twelve apostles in 1954.

"Sometimes our own people get the idea that AA is a religion. That if you join AA you may be taken out of your own church. Oh, no. No, when a Mormon joins AA, he becomes the best Mormon he has been for many years...I've learned from these men that there isn't a man living who isn't greater than his sins, who isn't greater than his weaknesses. I like to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. They do a great work. If we can just work these programs out right, we can accomplish almost anything. I am one of their head members. They bring into my heart a spirit of humility and a spirit of sincerity."
