On raising children -- what economists have to say

I was listening to http://freakonomics.com/2011/08/17/new-freakonomics-radio-podcast-the-economists-guide-to-parenting/ and paid attention to the take-aways.

  1. Children remember kindness.  Being kind to them is one of the few things you can do that lasts.
  2. Children learn a few things from you.
    • Whether or not to smoke.
    • Whether or not to drink.
    • Whether or not to be kind to others.
    • -- your example matters.
  3. Parents who do not obsess are happier and their children are happier and just as successful or more successful than obsessive parents children.
